Prepare and apply the Pre-Production planning for a music video

Lyric Analysis

Copyright issues

Using the work of others
If you use samples of music by other authors in your work, ensure that you get permission to use the work before you attempt to publish or sell your work. Similarly, if you use loops or samples available via sample collections etc. ensure that these are licensed as free to use, or obtain permission first.
Obtaining permission

If you need to get permission to use a piece of music, normally the best place to start is with the last know publisher for the work. They will certainly know how to get permission to use the work, so they will certainly know who you would need to contact.

Where music is written as a group effort, we recommend that you draw up an agreement to clarify issues, such as which rights belong to which member, and how royalties would be distributed in the event that members of your group leave.

For successful commercial bands, incorporation is also an option. As with a normal incorporated company, the band members would own shares in the band/company. In this situation, a band member would typically sell his shares to the other members if he decided to leave.

Lyrics:

You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Anyplace is better
Starting from zero got nothing to lose
Maybe we'll make something
Me, myself I got nothing to prove
You got a fast car
I got a plan to get us out of here
I been working at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
Won't have to drive too far
Just 'cross the border and into the city
You and I can both get jobs
And finally see what it means to be living
You see my old man's got a problem
He live with the bottle that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
My mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away
We gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way
So remember we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
I had a feeling that I belonged
I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
You got a fast car
We go cruising to entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
I work in a market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
We'll move out of the shelter
Buy a bigger house and live in the suburbs
I remember we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
I had a feeling that I belonged
I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do of your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me would find it
I got no plans I ain't going nowhere
So take your fast car and keep on driving
I remember we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
I had a feeling that I belonged
I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
You got a fast car
But is it fast enough so you can fly away
You gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

film editing

The Lumiere brothers

The history of film editing started with the Lumiere brothers, as they were early pioneers of film making inventing the cinematography, in 1895, which is an early film camera and projector.  Early films were short films that were one long, static shots, and lock-down shots.

Technology
The application of photographic principles and the launch of photographic quality celluloid saw Thomas Edison and William Dickson developing their own moving picture device - the Kinetoscope, a peephole device which invited viewers to look into a hole in the top of a large wooden cabinet and experience true moving pictures.
The Lumière's in France inspired by Edison's Kinetoscope, set about developing their own moving picture device - the Cinématographe, a 'taking picture' device which doubled as a projection device when light was directed into the back of the camera, passing through the celluloid film and out of the lens

Georges Melies
Had the capacity for manipulating and distorting time and space. He expanded upon his initial ideas and devised some complex special effects. He pioneered the first double exposure, the first split screen with performers acting opposite themselves, and the first dissolve. Melies tackled a wide range of subjects as well as the fantasy films usually associated with him, including advertising films and serious dramas.

D.W. Griffith was one of the first people to create a full feature film called The Birth of a Nation in 1915 in America, and Griffith was one of the first to use different camera techniques that are commonly used today, like panoramic long shots, still shots and panning shots to create his film. Griffith was one of the first to understand how certain film techniques could be used to create an expressive language. The Birth of a Nation is based on the Novel “The Clansman” -1915 The film included camera techniques such as panoramic long shots, iris effect, still shots, cross cutting and panning shots. There techniques are widely used today to create films

In 1908 Emile Cohl created one of the first animated cartoon films, called Fantasmagorie made up of 700 drawings, each one being double-exposed. Cohl made Fantasmagorie from February to May or June 1908. This is considered the first fully animated film ever made. Despite the short running time, the piece was packed with material devised in a stream of consciousness style.

In 1941, Orson Welles directed the revolutionary film Citizen Kane which even today is seen as one of the best films ever produced. It involved techniques people hadn't seen before like fades and experimental angles. Orson believed in film editing being one of the main process in producing a film. Editing is the last stop between an idea and the final product.

In 1979 Apocalypse Now was released. The opening of 'Apocalypse Now' saw him fade 5 clips over one another with different audio. At the time this was a really difficult thing to do. 'Murch' increased the prowess of his talent by being able to boast emotion through the editing of the opening. He did this through the fades and sounds. When understanding the technology the feat is highly creditable.

In 2002 the City of God was released and the editing has been used carefully in this film and much likethe cinematography, aspects used are typical of Scorsese films. Meirelles uses fast cutediting which is found a lotin Scorsese’s work, thistechnique is not typicallyfound in issue films and avoidsmaking the film feel long inlength. It also isrepresentative of thechaotic life of the favelas.

History of film editing

The history of film editing started with the Lumiere brothers, as they were early pioneers of film making inventing the cinematography, in 1895, which is an early film camera and projector.  Early films were short films that were one long, static shots, and lock-down shots. Originally film editing was done by physically cutting up the film reel and fixing them together using a splicer to create the final film.(1) D.W. Types of Shots and Transitions.

Long shot- Contains landscape but gives the viewer a more specific idea of setting. A long shot may show the viewers the building where the action will take place.
Full shot- Is a complete view of the characters. From this shot, viewers can take in the costumes of characters and may also help to demonstrate the relationships between characters. For more information on costumes and acting refer to Chapter 4.
Mid shot- contains the characters or a character from the waist up. From this shot, viewers can see the characters' faces more clearly as well as their interaction with other characters. This is also known as a social shot
Close-up- contains just one character's face. This enables viewers to understand the actor's emotions and also allows them to feel empathy for the character. This is also known as a personal shot.
Extreme long shot- Is a large amount of landscape. It is often used at the beginning of a scene or a film to establish general location. This is also known as an establishing shot. (4)
Two ShotThis is a shot of two peoples or other individuals together.
Cut Away- Cutaways are used in the editing process to fill in footage which is different from the main action.  B-roll is often used for cut-aways.

Over the Shoulder Shots- Are shot from behind the person towards their subject.  Generally the frame is cut off just behind the ear, although there are several variations.

Point of View- This is an effective shot that gives the audience the feel that you’re seeing it from the eyes of the performer.  It is taken from near the eye-level of the actor and shows what he might see.

Selective Focus- Allows you to be able to create a shallow depth of field.  This effectively leaves one part of the frame in focus while blurring others, such as the foreground or background. (5)
Cuts- A cut happens when one shot instantly replaces the other.
Fade- Fade outs happen when the picture is gradually replaced by black screen or any other solid color.
Dissolve- Dissolves happen when one shot gradually replaces by the next. One disappears as the following appears.
WipeThat happen when one shot pushes the other off frame.(6)
